I'm thinking shelving...

I have a confession: I am addicted to HGTV.

I don't even know why. I'm a renter, and I grew up in a house that had pink carpets, wood panneling, ducks on the wallpaper (and actual ducks on the wall) so it's not like I've had exposure to people who care about interior design and/or house-flipping strategies.

But now! A magic portal of design and nesting possibilities has opened! We painted our livingroom walls a warm, dramatic shade of red. Our bathroom is a pleasantly cool shade of green, and I'm going to be handpainting asian wood graphics on both. Before you ask, the answer is yes. I will be posting pictures when it's finished.

I'm in love with slate tiles. I'm intrigued by green building, and I want bamboo shades. I lust after stainless steel kitchen appliances and cleverly hidden storage nooks. I feel like I don't have enough variety in my bed linens. I want my wood to match, and we just got a new shower curtain to match our rugs and wall color... and I'm starting to daydream of coordinated accessories.

What happened to me? Where did this come from? I'm so not Suzie Homemaker.

ME TOOOOOOO. I've always loved HGTV (as well as food network -- more stainless steel to drool over PLUS food). It's like an obsession. It kind of came after my obsession with Trading Spaces YEARS ago, but ugh. I just... I love it. I feel ya, gurl. SO CRACK.

Oh man, Food Network is right up there for me too. But I HATE Rachel Ray. I want to stab her with one of her own knives.

SERIOUSLY. I started flirting with Iron Chef, then I had to watch anything with Bobby Flay in it and next thing you know I'm taking notes on how to make port wine reductions!

There's nothing domestic about me but I've been addicted to HGTV for years now. Divine Design is my favorite show. What I think is great about the channel is that it's inspiring people to fix up their houses and showing them it doesn't have to be an arm and a leg to do it.

HGTV, STYLE, and CourtTV are my life.

OMG! I love Style and Bravo too.

I really dig Divine Design too, but I hate Design Cents. Everything that woman does makes me want to scream. I have to stop myself from sending angry letters to the producers.

I totally hear you on the cost-friendly message. It's amazing. We only spent about 35 dollars on paint, and we've painted four rooms and seriously boosted the warmth and livability of our apartment. Boo on impersonal, stark white walls!

Bravo is great too. I love watching it at night because that's when the good shows rerun.

In one episode they showed her house and it was the most tackiest house I've ever seen! I can't understand why the homeowners are always so happy with the resists. I also can't stand the Design to Sell because here are people who never bothered to fix up their house but when it comes to selling it THEN they decide to put money in the house.

results* how did I get resists?

It happens.

I think it's funny because these people are always convinced their house is crap and that they need a better one, but by the time they're done they don't want to leave. It's a big HA HA.

Which is probably also why I love the new show Hidden Potential.

LMAOOO Man, HGTV is all my mom watches, pretty much. Except when Ken (step-dad) wants to watch the History Channel or Discovery Channel.

Do you have any favorite HGTV shows? I like Divine Design the best. But I also like Get Color with David Bromstad (sp?!?!?!). Then I like ReDesign with Kenneth something or another? I don't like the organization shows or the craft shows (I hate crafts. LOLLL) and a lot of the lower budget shows annoy me. Like the ones where they just take shit from the rest of your house and put it in the room you're wanting designed. I don't like those shows. LOLLL

As you can see I watch too much of that channel myself.

I really dig Divine Design and the others you mention. Hidden Potential is also great, and shows like My First Place and House Hunters are really just an excuse to oggle real estate.

I'm kind of okay with Design on a Dime and the thrifty shows, but I totally hear your argument. Sometimes it ticks me off because not only are they stripping other rooms of any other design, flow, and possibly functionality... but it's always so unlikely.

"Oh look, we found this wonderful rustic barn-door in the garage! We'll make it into a one-of-a-kind bench!" Seriously. The things I've seen them "find"... it's absurd. I really think HGTV plants things sometimes and just plays it off as a trip to see what's hiding in the garage. Did you ever notice too how they magically sprout mod accessories? It's true.

Oh, I like Design on a Dime. Usually they can do some okay stuff. I think I mostly mean shows like....I have to think of the name LOL...Ummm, Decorating Cents or something. That show just drives me crazy.

LMAO But I have noticed that, yes! Sometimes I'm sitting there watching going "Why the fuck do they have that in their garage?!!?!?! WHO HAS SOMETHING LIKE THAT?"

I had pink carpet toooooooooooo!omg! I wonder if it's a Minnesota or Northern thing cause down south everything is dull drab beige...
Jun. 11th, 2007 02:21 pm (UTC)
Oh man! I am so sorry that you had to suffer it too.

We actually had at least four extremely disturbing carpet choices when we moved in, two of which are still there. There used to be brown stripey carpeting in the kitchen (who does that? I mean seriously) and the horrible pink shade that ran all along the top floor of our house.

I donno if it's a Wisconsin-Minnesota trend, though. I just know it was bad.

I'm totally in love with these things too. I just keep picturing what I want to paint my house and stuff. I had all these dreams for my first apartment too. But I learned that the apartmet was just a dumping ground. I love light blue and khaki or brown together. Awesome.

I'm a huge fan of really dramatic colors. I just love color. It really makes me feel inspired. Also, I want to live in a beautifully composed space. I think composition has so much of an effect on how you percieve yourself.

House flipping passion
I wasn't such a type of a person too and wasn't interested in house-flipping but once my mother gave a magazine about decorating and remodeling your house.I really like it and wanted to try it.This was the beginning and now it has turned into passion.
