Breaking News

Saddam Hussein is going to be executed tonight.

I don't normally talk about politics here, but what do you guys think about all this? I personally hate that his daughter couldn't come see her father before he is killed. I also can't believe they're going to hang him. That just seems so... barbaric. I realize that he has done horrible things, but he's still a human. He still has a family, and why can't we just do lethal injection?

i think it's great!

what is so barbaric about hanging? also, the brutality of death isn't diminished by choosing a more scientific method, at least not that i can see.

and after what he did to the Kurds, he deserves some brutal treatment.

if i was Saddam i never ever ever would have let the Americans capture me. i would have shot myself when i was hiding in the hole in the ground.

if you think about it, hanging and lethal injection cost the same (the injection it's self is only about 17 dollars and the millions is from court appeals and such), have quick deaths, and with the way Sadaam has treated the world and his own countrymen, I'm surprised they didn't lynch the bastard.

yes, it sucks they won't let his daughter see him.

I agree. I'm traditionally anti-death penalty anyway. It seems...like...we could do better. Of course, as is usually the case, the human race dissapoints.

Or maybe it's just the beard and the armani suits. He looks like someone's slightly confused, slightly cool grandfather. Without the beret, the military uniform, and the 70s-quality arabian TV clips, he almost looks....human!

Yeah I was totally weirded out by the press photo. I think Kim Jong Il is next on the "scary political figure" make-over list.

I was weirded out just by the fact that he was going to be put to death. To me, the death penalty is really creepy

The thing about hanging is that it seems to send out a bigger message to people. It sounds horrible, but if you think about it - giving him a lethal injection would kill him, but people wouldn't really take it to heart as much as a hanging. I don't know. I think it's just fighting brutality with brutality.

The thing about his daughter is really sad, though.

Yeah... and I understand it's a symbolic act, and it's much better than cutting off his head but I just don't think it'll fix it. Hanging Saddam won't bring peace between the tribes. It just won't.

Hm, I'm anti-death penalty so I don't really see why he couldn't have been locked up and degraded for the rest of his life. Surely, this is the easy way out for him? Also, he'll now become a martyr for the Sunnis. Brilliant.

Totally, and wtf.

I do understand that he did some really horrible, unspeakable things but dammit - eye for an eye doesn't even fucking cut it in this situation and two wrongs never made a right in my book.

I don't know what to think about this whole situation.

I know after WWI (when Iraq wasn't a country, but just a region) the League of Nations granted that area to the United Kingdom in a mandate. So, basically Winston Churchill & the british created Iraq knowing full & well that the Kurds, Sunnis and Shiites all inhabited that area. Then, the british pulled out and left Iraq alone.

Saddam Hussein is a Sunne. Most of Iraq are Shiites. Then, there are the Kurds. All want control of Iraq. Kurds wanted out.

I don't agree in what Saddam did, but... I can't say I didn't see it coming. I highly doubt that the situation in Iraq will ever become "democratic" and peaceful. HOW CAN IT? You have Sunnes and Shiites living in the same area! They'll NEVER get along! HELLO!

So, I've rambled. Whatever.

And that drives me nuts too. I realize that religion is an extremely powerful motivator, and patriotism/nationalism is too... but shouldn't a desire for peace emerge after oh, I don't know, centuries of blood?

WE do not have a say in how he dies. The country he took over, the people whose families he murdered, chose hanging, because that is how things are done. He could've been beheaded, but instead they chose to hang him. Part of his execution is to set an example - you enact genocide, you die.

If he were a family man, I would feel bad for his family. For the most part, he ignored his wife and daughter, so he doesn't so much have a family in my book.

Yeah, okay. I hear that.

I think I read somewhere that Hussein believes hanging to be a shameful death, as he most often executed his own enemies in that fashion. I suppose it's the punishment for peasants?

Anyway, I think his execution was a bad tactical decision. It's going to cause some serious rebellion.

An afterthought: I think that that "killing for peace is like fucking for virginity" quote applies here.
Dec. 31st, 2006 03:36 pm (UTC)
Yeah. It just... doesn't make sense.
Dec. 31st, 2006 03:38 pm (UTC)
Yeah, last time I checked, the body count after Saddam's death was something like... 80 civilians were victims of violence.
Dec. 31st, 2006 05:49 pm (UTC)
Saddam was a terrible man, and did awfull things, but I'm not one for capital punishment, he should have had a prison sentance and be made to rot in there for life and he didn't even get sentanced for what he did to the kurds and they went straight for the execution :/ if I was a kurd, I would be pissed off, I really don't thing this will help, Saddam wasn't a threat anymore and all this is going to do is create more violence, the sunni arab extreamists won't be happy, and more people will probably die.

That's how things are done in the Middle East. Barbaric or not, the hanging was their call. I'm glad Saddam is dead but just for good measure, we ought to have our dictator, ole Bush, hung too. (But then you get into that whole semantic argument of what makes a martyr, etc and it's just not worth losing sleep over.)

Unfortunately, that entire region lives by a very Orwellian concept of survival. War IS peace. It's all they know. A utopia, or even a viable government, will NEVER happen, no matter who intervenes, no matter if American troops stay or go.

Well, if there's a decently long drop, hanging will actually kill him faster and less painfully than lethal injection.
