Welcome and weirdness...

Woo! I know I should've gotten to this sooner, because I'm super excited to be able to say hello to all my new friends!

angelich, ensemble, ewacat, sucksoutloud, rhapsody, sonicreverie, splits_thesky, truffle_shuffle, and valley_ofdreams!

*waves frenetically*

Welcome! My name is Shelby, and I'm a 21-year-old journalism student at the University of Minnesota in the Twin Cities. I live in uptown Minneapolis with faithlynn, and our sweet, stupid beagle, Gucci.

That doesn't really tell you much about me, however, but I'm sure you'll catch on quickly. I write a lot of RL, but here's a bit of background. I am an Aries through and through. Standard traits definitely apply: I'm passionate, strong-willed, opinionated, stubborn, and impulsive. I am extremely protective of the ones I love, and I love a lot. ♥

I am a second generation American, mainly from Irish, Sicilian, and German stock. As you can imagine, I do have a temper on me, but it takes a lot to get it going. I like to feign outrage, liek a lot though. Please, feel free to take all of my angst with a rather large piece of rock salt. I'm extremely sarcastic pretty much all of the time.

In terms of the family scene, I'm kind of the sea-foam green sheep. I don't fit in at all. My mother loves computers, sports, wine, and - evidently - unprovoked, snarky phone calls. My father loves hunting, politics, fixing things - including people, and swearing loudly at the radio. I'm not sure that my 20-year-old brother feels strongly about anything, but he just started studying graphic design, so there's hope. I am an artiste! Art is pretty much all I concern myself with, and it drives my parents nuts for various reasons. My mother is convinced I will starve to death shortly after the student loans come due, and my father wishes I'd become a political journalist and fix the system instead of falling all over music and film. While I do feel very strongly about certain social issues, I loathe politics, bureaucratic cock-ups, partisan hackery, and stay as far away as possible. You probably won't see a whole heck of a lot of political discussion here, and I prefer it that way.

Anyway, as a journalist, I love the news. More specifically, I love making fun of the news. In terms of watching it, I'm not a big fan. I get most of my televised news from The Daily Show and The Colbert Report. Otherwise, I love me some print journalism. Every now and again, I do a News Roundup, compile a bunch of news articles that are either relevant or hilarious, and serve them up with a steaming side of sarcasm.

I love music, and I have a ton. If you ever want to know what I'm listening to, ask me. I will upload it for you. I've made mixes on request before, and I know I'll do it again.

I love films, and I normally write something after I see one. I don't want to say they're reviews, because most of them aren't. Sometime's it's a snarky one liner, sometimes it's just squee, but I love me some movies. Let's go to the movies.

I also love writing. I would love to be an author someday, but I'd also like to eat. Hence, journalism. Anyway, I do a fair bit of writing and I post it on here occasionally. You can find some of my older, unedited pieces in my memories. Concrit is always welcome if you're into that sort of thing, and if you ever want me to proof something for you I'd be more tha happy to do so. I mod for a couple writing communities: drabble_0n an anything goes drabble community, mt_diaries my metro transit diaries, and fnwc a copy-editing service provided by myself and faithlynn. Feel free to check, join, or pimp any of the above.

I love the tee vee, and occasionally I write reviews or recaps. I wrote a bunch of recaps for Invasion, and I'm still vaguely planning on recapping the rest of the first season for invadetheglades, yet another community that I mod for. I love a lot of shows, but mainly: Lost, Weeds, Big Love, Sex and the City, Invasion, Project Runway, Iron Chef, So You Think You Can Dance, American Idol, Nashville Star, The Daily Show, the Colbert Report, and I'm sure there will be more.

I love books, and reading. I read a lot, and I really like to discuss. I read a lot of books, a lot of genres, and a lot of authors. Harry Potter is a given, and Hunter S. Thompson is a personal favorite. I really enjoy Lynne Truss, and I mod for grammar_pandas in honor of Eats, Shoots, & Leaves. I also read a lot of fanfiction, and mod for sbp_midwest: a community for shoebox_project fans living in the midwest.

I also love me some picspam, and I do manflesh entries every now and again.

Anyway, this is long and I'm growing weary of talking about my self. So for the sake of not feeling self-indulgent, we'll add my most recent "silly poll." You may or may not be aware of the coming celestial event, but on August 26th Mars is going to be like a second moon. I am inclined to believe that would be the best possible time for an alien invasion, so we're trying to figure out what sort of alien will come rain death down on us from the heavens.

Double Elimination! Marvin and Zim got together and discussed working together, but Nickelodeon evicted them both and shredded the last of their self-confidence and hope. Ouch.

Poll #797608 Alien Survivor Round Five

Let's unite, humanity! Who are we refusing to be destroyed by now?

Virtually indestructible, black, acid-dripping aliens from Alien.
War of the Worlds aliens
The Vogons, a la Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
The orange, glowing, sea-blob aliens that drown, stab, and replicate like in Invasion (similarly, see also: Invasion of the Body Snatchers)
Mangalores, The Fifth Element
The Goa'uld, c/o Stargate SG-1
Nymphomaniacal super-fighters from the Species series.

Hee! Hi!

P.S. Your icon makes me squee a little bit.
Aug. 17th, 2006 02:28 pm (UTC)
You know, I keep voting for the Invasion of the Body Snatchers one because...that movie...yeah. I am CONVINCED that they would've been the FIRST to go had anyone ACTUALLY seen that movie ;)

Yeah... I think it's because that option is also associated with Invasion, and I have a lot of people on this list who like Invasion.

I don't know if you saw that show, but those aliens were pretty hardcore.

I should really do a post like this, but I'm far too lazy. So POINTS TO YOU!! :)

And thank you! Heh, if only I could put this much effort into my schoolwork, I would be in Harvard.

This is so great! I love that I know all these little bits about you and now it's all come together in this wonderful bit of writing. :D You really are a good writer - your writing flows nicely and I honestly enjoyed reading this. I'm so happy to have gotten to know you over the last year(s?) or so. :DD

Really, though, \:D/.
Aug. 17th, 2006 10:07 pm (UTC)
Hooray! Good riddance, I say! And, also, to all the new friends: All you need to know about Shelby is that she is made of awesome and genius. *nods sagely*

Also, I've just now found a love for The Daily Show and especially The Colbert Report. Mmm Stephen (that is his name right? ¬¬) Colbert. ♥♥
Aug. 17th, 2006 10:11 pm (UTC)
Awwww, thanks! *hug*

Hooray! Yes, it is Stephen, and he is ridiculously charming.

Wait until one day when he screws up, loses his shit, and just grins. It's so heartwarming. Even thinking about it makes me giggle inside. XD

Re: HEE!
Yay no problem! I only speak the truth! *hughug* ♥

Ugh he's so endearing xD I want to see that happen! It'd be so cute! ♥
Aug. 18th, 2006 12:36 am (UTC)
You're awesome. I think we're going to get along famously (as they say, or whatever that means, lol).

Aug. 18th, 2006 12:46 am (UTC)
Oh, and also? I was almost named Shelby. My mom vetoed it.
Aug. 18th, 2006 01:25 am (UTC)
Weird! I was going to be "Sydney"... but my father was an automechanic for 20 years, and he loves Shelby Cobras to a degree that is truely embarrassing.
Aug. 18th, 2006 06:53 am (UTC)
My dad is a mechanic too! Well, now he's a teacher, but he teaches auto mechanics, lol. And his love of Shelby cars was why he wanted to name me that.
Aug. 18th, 2006 02:46 pm (UTC)
omg, shut up. No way. That is too weird.

My dad is a nurse now. 0_o He went from fixing cars to fixing people.
Aug. 18th, 2006 01:26 am (UTC)
Hooray! I agree. This is dangerously beautiful.
Aug. 18th, 2006 07:48 am (UTC)
I also love writing. I would love to be an author someday, but I'd also like to eat. Hence, journalism.

Haha, OOPS. Let me give you a peak into a real conversation I had at work today, at the Tribune, mind you.

Editor No. 1: Hmmmm, this story says that all those awards shows gift bags they give to celebrities are going to become taxable.

Editor No. 2: That's like $48,000 apiece!

Editor No. 3: Yeah, but that's like pocket change for them.

Me: Shoot, I WISH I made $48,000.

Yeah, journalists make ass, unless you write for a fricken tabloid or shoot to immediate writing stardom. I'm so jealous of Cameron Crowe. Why couldn't I have been touring the country with bands when I was 15???
Aug. 18th, 2006 02:42 pm (UTC)
What's the difference between a journalist and a 14-inch pizza?

... the 14-inch pizza can feed a family of four.

I'm aware that journalists don't make much, which I guess is another reason I'm shooting for entertainment journalism. If I could write about films and the stars and music and such, I'd be fit as a fiddle.
Aug. 18th, 2006 06:23 pm (UTC)
Bwahahaha BEST JOKE EVER. So true, so true! :)

Writing for most of the publications that I do: zero dollars.

Money I've probably spent over the years on parking to attend movie screenings for the press: $100+

Getting to meet people like muthafucken Samuel L. Jackson, Angelina Jolie, Jared Leto, Elijah Wood, Billy Corgan and Ray Bradbury: Absolutely priceless! (Or at least worth that 14-in pizza.)
Aug. 18th, 2006 10:03 pm (UTC)
See, that would be totally badass. Also, do you really take issue with the way you live?

I'm content with my current situation, and I am a dirt poor college student.
Aug. 19th, 2006 12:53 am (UTC)
Nah, I'm just a cranky yutz too often. Life is really really good.
