The Lesser Demon Wears Prada...

aither_nyx and I saw The Devil Wears Prada last night. I really enjoyed it, because I adore Meryl Streep. Honestly, if you don't, you're no friend of mine.

Now, I haven't read the book. I've read a couple reviews though, and I've heard the novel is actually pretty bad? Have any of you read it? Let me know what you think, will you?

In terms of the movie, I really didn't think "the boss" was the devil? Yeah, she was moody. Yeah she did some ludicrous things, but because they were so ludicrous it didn't really make her seem like a bitch because you knew it was ludicrous? And maybe it's the editor in me, but I really don't think "the boss" was wholly inhuman and cruel. She was busy, intelligent, and determined. It's a high stress, high demand job. You have to be a step ahead of everything, and still remember what you did 24 issues ago.

Also, I didn't feel like our main character really "sold out" to her boss. She was learning the trade, she had the opportunity to wear fabulous clothes for free, she had a demanding schedule and most things that went wrong were absolutely out of her control. Like getting kissed on the cheek or needing to go to Paris? Totally not her fault. I think her friends over-reacted. I'm sure there's going to be job-transition tension after college for all of us... but damn. Again, it was kind of unrealistic and I had a hard time empathizing because Andy was kind of dumb about everything?

It was a fun movie. I liked it, but it's a summer movie.

Other than that, I loved the name dropping and then lack of the faces. Oh yeah, the Michael Kors collection, Karl Lagerfeld, Manolo Blahnik... and none of them are in the movie. The clothes and shoes were gorgeous, though. Absolutely beautiful. I really can't wait for Project Runway to come back.

Lighten up, it's just faaaashion.

I'll let you know what my friend <lj-user=tactlessoracle"> thinks when she's done; she's also then passing it on to me. She said it's pretty cute so far

I read it last summer and remember it being totally stupid and worthless, but in the best possible way. You know? Like I was kind of embarrassed for reading it, but it was a lot of fun.
I just saw the movie two nights ago. It's gotten terrible reviews, and I liked it so much more than I was expecting to. Kind of like the book in that it wasn't particuarly well-done (except Streep, of course, I'm totally with you there) but it was enjoyable. Heh, my friends and I were joking afterward about how the moral of the movie was basically "Screw the career, go for the cute boyfriend."
Ah, it totally made me remember how much I love Meryl Streep, though. Because of that I watched Adaptation again last night. And whined to my friends about how I want to look like Meryl Streep when I get old. And Maggie Gyllenhaal before then...

One question I had about the movie, though. None of my friends really came up with a suitable answer, so maybe you have some insight:
Nate asked her to move with him to Boston, right? And because Nate is REALLY HOT and also really nice and loves her and all that, she's going to go with him, right? That's the obvious answer.
But then she got a job at the New York Mirror. Which isn't really a job you can do from Boston. So...what? Is she staying there or going with him? There was absolutely no resolution there, and it pissed me off.

Quite honestly, I noticed that too and was only minimally miffed. I figured she'd take it for the time being, because... isn't he leaving in like a month? She can write a few stories, get a couple of clips before the move. I figured that she and the boy would probably talk it over like reasonable adults, and in the end she'd move to Bostan and write for the Herald or something.

Oh! And with the book bit, I heard that it doesn't really line up with the movie. Like, "the Boss" is even more of a whore-bitch than on the screen ... because I honestly didn't think she was that bad. Also, I hear like... 92% of the book is the author describing every movement in intricate detail... "and then I went here, and it was filled with bla bla bla". Is that true?

I heard that Project Runway is coming back next week. Is this true? Is the waiting finally over?

Meryl Streep rocks my world. Best actress ever.
