Now, I haven't read the book. I've read a couple reviews though, and I've heard the novel is actually pretty bad? Have any of you read it? Let me know what you think, will you?
In terms of the movie, I really didn't think "the boss" was the devil? Yeah, she was moody. Yeah she did some ludicrous things, but because they were so ludicrous it didn't really make her seem like a bitch because you knew it was ludicrous? And maybe it's the editor in me, but I really don't think "the boss" was wholly inhuman and cruel. She was busy, intelligent, and determined. It's a high stress, high demand job. You have to be a step ahead of everything, and still remember what you did 24 issues ago.
Also, I didn't feel like our main character really "sold out" to her boss. She was learning the trade, she had the opportunity to wear fabulous clothes for free, she had a demanding schedule and most things that went wrong were absolutely out of her control. Like getting kissed on the cheek or needing to go to Paris? Totally not her fault. I think her friends over-reacted. I'm sure there's going to be job-transition tension after college for all of us... but damn. Again, it was kind of unrealistic and I had a hard time empathizing because Andy was kind of dumb about everything?
It was a fun movie. I liked it, but it's a summer movie.
Other than that, I loved the name dropping and then lack of the faces. Oh yeah, the Michael Kors collection, Karl Lagerfeld, Manolo Blahnik... and none of them are in the movie. The clothes and shoes were gorgeous, though. Absolutely beautiful. I really can't wait for Project Runway to come back.
